I’m a writer who lives in Wisconsin. My essays have appeared in Harper's Magazinen+1, The Point, Boston Review, The Guardian, Ploughshares, newyorker.com, Tin House, The Threepenny Review, Oxford American, The Los Angeles Review of Books and the New York Times, and have been included in the Pushcart Prize anthologies and in The Best American Essays 2017. I write a column for The Paris Review called Objects of Despair.  I’m the author of the essay collection Interior States, which won the 2018 Believer Book Award for nonfiction.
